By winning two out of three games from Boneyard Boccie Ball Club, Severin’s All-Stars-n-Stitches maintained their first place point spread and won the 2008 winter league bocce championship at Bocce USA. After a slow start and losing the first game 9-3, the All-Stars’s bounced back hard to win the second contest 9-1. The final and crucial game went down to the wire with Severin’s
winning by a score of 9-8.. It was Ted and Mary James of Herrin doing the pointing for the All-Stars and Mary Lynn Whitlow of West Frankfort making the needed hits. Bill Lipscomb of Benton was the leader for Boneyard.
Something had to give when the second and third place teams in the standings had to play one another, McCord’s Market and Greg Galli Auto Body. McCords won the first two games by scores of 9-6 and 9-8. However, Galli’s retaliated winning the third and final game 9-5. Betty Stipes of West Frankfort was the leader for McCord’s. Shirley Galli of West Frankfort was top scorer for the body menders. Sitting quietly in the wings were The Franklin-Williamson Foundation team only 5 points out of second place. Nadine Battioli and Diane Hammann of Herrin took charge and captured all three games from Stotlar Lumber Company. By winning all three games with McCord’s winning two and Galli’s taking only one this kicked the Foundation into a tie for second place and dropping Galli’s to fourth place.
Southern Illinois Bank nailed J & S Professional Pharmacy for two out of three games, 9-5 and 9-8. Finally, Team Captain Joyce Fogleman rallied her troops and won the last game 9-6. Jan and Ardell Tripp of Hurst were the top scorers for the Bankers while Joyce Fogleman was the top pill pusher. The West Frankfort Lions Club was the hottest team of the evening as they blanked Edward Jones holding them to only two points all evening, 9-2, 9-0 and 9-0.
It was Orient’s Mayor, Mario Allois and Bob Ellis of West Frankfort doing the pointing for the Lions.
Northern Baptist Church drew the bye and the automatic 42 points.

BOCCE USA TOP FIVE PLACES UP FOR GRABS
With only seven nights of Monday night winter league play remaining in the 2007-2008 bocce season at Bocce USA, only twenty seven points separate the top five contenders.
First place team McCord’s Market lost a valuable point lead when Stotlar Lumber Company won all three games. McCord’s were apprehended
by player shortage and had to use three substitute as three of their key point players were unavailable for evening play. Stotlar’s won all three matches by scores of 9-4, 9-6, and 9-7. McCord’s played Stotlar’s tough
all three games but was just a few points short on in three games.
Yvonne Holland of Hurst was the key pointer for Stotlar’s while Royce White and Donna Ellis of West Frankfort scored for McCord’s.
Franklin-Williamson Foundation won all three games, 9-4. 9-0,-9 4 from Edward Jones. The Jones crew were without two of their regular league players, Chuck and Gayla Kain. Nadine Battioli of Herrin was top pointer for the Foundation.
Boneyard Boccie Ball Club of Benton took the first two games from Northern Baptist church by scores of 9-3 and 9-4. Pat Hollada of Benton was Boneyard’s key player for the night. In the last game the Church Minister, Reverend David Utley and Val Griggs found the rolling groove and salvaged the contest by a score of 9-5.
In the late night session, The West Frankfort Lion’s Club hooked up the ever vocal J & S Professional Pharmacy crew. The Lion’s club roared loud as they slipped by winning all the games, 9-6, 9-8, and 9-6. Gary Harrum of West Frankfort and Orient’s Mayor, Mario Allois were the top pointer and hitters for the Lion’s Club. The J & S Pill Pushers played some good bocce, However, with some bad luck just came up a few points short in each game. Carl Metheney of West Frankfort and Sally Neimeyer of Benton lead the way for J & S Pharmacy.
The hottest fought battle of the night was in the early 6:00 PM session when Severin’s All-Stars-n-Stitches of Benton took on Southern Illinois Bank of West Frankfort. All three games were decided in the final frame of each match as the score was tied 8-8 each time. In the first game, Ted James of Herrin ground point stood as the winning point giving the game to Severin’s by a score of 9-8. The second game also repeated itself when spouse Mary James made a crucial hit with her last ball splitting the group of balls and making the winning point 9-8.
The last and final game also went down to the wire. In the last and final frame, Bob Whitlow lead off with a “Peepa” as his ball was touching the pollina. It looked like a winner, but as bocce strategy is played, Joe Borgra of Christopher made a direct hit separating Whitlow’s ball and the pollina opening up the game. In her final roll, Jan Tripp of Hurst rolled in the winning point securing the game, 9-8 avoiding the Severin sweep. During all three games, Severin’s Team Captain, Mary Lynn Whitlow made numerous hits opening up the game and scoring team points.
Greg Galli Auto Body of West Frankfort had the bye night and the automatic 42 points added to their previous running total score.
